Guide to Buying a Dishwasher

A dishwasher is an essential appliance in many homes, saving you time and keeping your kitchen clear of dirty pots and pans. They are also more hygienic than hand washing, cleaning dishes at temperatures of up to 70°C.

Type of Dishwasher

Freestanding

These are a common and versatile option, fitting into your kitchen anywhere that you have space. The front door is exposed, and they can be taken with you when you move home.

Integrated

These are built into your units, with a fully or partially covered door. They are a sleek and attractive option for modern kitchens.

Size of Dishwasher

Full Size

Full size dishwashers hold approximately 12 place settings, which is around 150 items. These are ideal for families or those who entertain regularly. They are also the most energy efficient option.

Slimline

Perfect for those who live alone or with one other person, slimline dishwashers hold approximately 10 place settings and are great for kitchens that are tight on space.

Compact

These only come in a freestanding option, and are designed to sit on your counter space. They are the least energy efficient option, but are great for those who can’t easily wash dishes or bend down to load and empty a standard dishwasher.

Also look out for:

Energy Rating - Most dishwashers are now energy rated A+ and above. This relates to the electricity and water consumption.

Adjustable Racks - Many dishwashers now come with adjustable racks, which allow for larger items to be washed.

Child Safety Locks - If you have small children, a child lock will prevent little hands changing the setting mid wash.

Delayed Start - This function allows you to make the most of late night energy costs or when you need your dishwasher to start/stop at a particular time.

Anti Flood - Sensors inside the dishwasher prevent the basin becoming overfull, so no surprise swimming pools in your kitchen!
