Nothing says summer quite like a good British picnic. Here are some of our essentials for a stress free and enjoyable day out basking in the sunshine. Just bring your favourite food and an endless supply of strawberries! (The Pimms is optional.)
From traditional gingham to cool and funky patterns, picnic blankets protect you from scratchy grass and give you a soft and warm place to sit. Try and find a blanket with a waterproof bottom, as these will keep you dry even on damp or wet ground - perfect for a British summer!
It goes without saying that you’ll need something to carry your food and drink in. Baskets work well as they are spacious and often have specific areas to hold your plates, glasses and cutlery. A cool bag is essential if you have any food that needs to stay cold, as well as for keeping drinks nice and chilled.
Not only are plastic dinner plates and glasses difficult to break, they are also lightweight and stackable, allowing you to transport them to the most picturesque and remote picnic spot.
Your favourite summer playlist can be the backdrop to your picnic, whether it’s pumping tunes or laid back vibes. Wireless speakers are perfect for trips outdoors, and allow everyone to enjoy the music.
For the more active amongst you, outdoor games like rounders and badminton are essentials for a fun picnic. Easy to play and great fun, they are a great way to while away an afternoon and work up an appetite.
If you plan on extending your picnic into the evening, then consider getting some citronella candles to keep pesky mosquitoes and biting insects at bay. They simply stake into the ground, can be used on a tabel, or hung up, and they also provide lovely ambient lighting.
Picnics can be eaten almost anywhere outside, from your own back garden to a local park to a beautiful spot you find on holiday. To make sure your picnic is as perfect as can be, check out our articles on decorating your garden, or the most relaxing holiday spots in the UK to find the ideal spot.
