Student Bedroom Essentials

When you move into university accommodation, your bedroom is likely to contain a bed, a desk with a chair, and some form of clothes storage such as drawers or a wardrobe. We’ve compiled a list of all the other essentials you’ll need to get the most out of your uni room.

Bedding

The most important thing to bring is your bedding! You’ll need a duvet, pillows, and sheets, at the very least. Your bed will probably take up most of the room, and you’re limited with décor in student accommodation, so perhaps choose your sheets to make a statement and show your style. We absolutely recommend a mattress protector – if your mattress isn’t still in the packaging, you have no idea how old it is. It may also be worth investing in a mattress topper. You’ll likely spend the next few years on this bed, so it’s worth making it comfortable!

Storage

The storage tends to be limited in university bedrooms. A hanging garment organiser adds the benefits of drawers to a wardrobe without taking up too much space. Some extra drawers could be handy, whether for clothes or uni things, and you could incorporate the storage into your decor with some fun designs! Alternatively, under-bed storage is an excellent space-saving option for university rooms.

Reed Diffuser

Most student housing won’t allow candles and incense and the like, because of the fire risks. To bring a fresh smell into your bedroom, opt for a reed diffuser! Plus, it has the benefit of constantly releasing that lovely aroma.

Wastepaper Bin

Whether it’s old sticky notes or scraps of rubbish, you won’t want to walk down to the kitchen each time to bin it. Putting a wastepaper basket in your bedroom helps to minimise mess and keep your room well looked after.

Doorstop

Propping open your bedroom door, especially when you’re unpacking, is a subtle way to let your housemates know you’re open for a chat. It’s more inviting than a closed door and will give you the chance to get those early introductions out of the way. Just avoid leaving fire doors open!

Comfort Items

You won’t have much input with the décor, but you can hang some wall art with adhesive hangers or add some cushions and throws to make your space your own. Many student houses are old buildings, so trust us when we say you’ll be grateful for the extra blankets later!

We hope this has helped you to create your university bedroom shopping list. If you're looking for ideas on what else to bring, see our article on Student Bathroom Essentials.
