Student Kitchen Essentials

If you’re off to University and are wondering what you need in your kitchen, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve compiled a handy checklist to make sure you’ve got everything you need to cook yourself some tasty and simple meals.

When moving into halls or shared accommodation, talk to your housemates first. It might be that there’s not enough cupboard space for everyone to have their own set of cookware, and you need to delegate who buys what. If you’re sharing items, ensure everyone is responsible enough to clean up after themselves, no one likes dirty pans in the sink!

Tableware and Drinkware

Starting with the absolute essentials, eating and drinking will be hard without a selection of tableware and drinkware. With a wide variety of designs and colours available, choosing items that you like is a great way to show off your personality. You’ll need:

  • A side plate (ideal for toast and sandwiches)
  • A dinner plate
  • A bowl
  • Cutlery (if you don’t want to share with housemates, getting cutlery with a pattern or bold design is a great idea to stop them from getting mixed up with others)
  • At least two mugs
  • A variety of glasses, whether you’re a wine, beer, or mixed drinks lover, having a glass for your favourite drink is essential for uni

For quick and convenient shopping, dinnersets are a great way to get all your essential dinnerware in one place.

Cookware

Whether you’re a budding chef or are learning to cook, these are the basics you’ll need to keep yourself fed:

If you love to cook and know you’ll be tackling recipes slightly more complex, it’s also a good idea to get a roasting dish, wok, grill pan and casserole dish.

Utensils

Essential for serving up and preparing food, the right utensils will make life in the kitchen easier. Some of these items come in convenient sets, meaning you don’t have to shop around for individual pieces and can have a stylish matching collection.

Appliances

There’s a good chance there will already be a kettle, toaster and microwave at your student home, whether you’re at halls or a student house, but it’s always a good idea to make sure before moving in. If you’re living with housemates, these are things that you can split the cost on.

Don't forget...

Tea towels are a must-have for any kitchen. Being able to swap them out regularly will keep your kitchen hygienic, so make sure you pack a few! Storage jars and canisters are also great for a uni kitchen to keep your tea, coffee and sugar fresh and organised. You can also use these to store pasta, flour, biscuits and more. A chopping board is another crucial item for food prep, protecting your worktops and keeping your space clean.

We hope this list helps you with your university packing. If you're looking for other must-have items, browse our Student Kitchen Essentials page.
