What to Sow in June & July
June is the perfect time to sow a variety of vegetables and Herbs such as:-
Vegtables: Carrots, lettuce, salad leaves, turnips, parsnips, sweetcorn, spinach, radish, spring onions and leeks.
Herbs: Coriander, basil, chervil, fennel, dill, and parsley.
To increase your success of growing it may be an idea to use a method called Companion Planting.
What is Companion Planting?
It is a natural way to help give your plants a good chance of survival. This can be by deterring pests or attracting different pests to prey on those that are damaging your crops.

Simple Garden Maintenance
Weeding, fertilizing and watering are all essential to keep your garden healthy and productive.
- Pull up any weeds that you see, especially the mature ones with long roots.
- Hoe the soil to remove small weeds and ensure that they don’t take root. Hoe about the top 3cm of soil on a dry day.
- Dispose of any diseased fruit/veg straight away in a rubbish bag, do not put on a compost heap as this may spread the disease.
- Pick off caterpillars
- Add mulch to your garden beds when you plants are around 10cm tall. Cover the ground around the plant but leave the stem free. Mulch will help to keep the water from evaporating and deter weeds.
It is important to know what type of soil you have in your garden. Most soil will need a fertiliser of some kind to ensure growth of your crops. Fertilisers include the following nutrients Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium (Potash) and Calcium and you can test your soil to see if it is deficient in any of them. A Multipurpose fertiliser is a useful item to have in your garden shed stock.
To keep your plants healthy you will need to water them regularly, a good time to water is the early evening. You can choose from a variety of watering tools such as Watering cans, Sprinklers and Hoses.
What to harvest in June & July
If you have already begun growing your garden, at this time of year there are many vegetables that are ripe for picking in June and July.
Spinach, lettuce, salad greens, oriental greens, radishes, spring onions and peas and also strawberries.
